About MTN South Africa

Using free internet config files on MTN South Africa

MTN South Africa is the country's second-largest mobile network, and from my testing it supports the widest range of VPN apps of any South African carrier. MTN SA runs a well-maintained 4G LTE network with strong coverage in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. For free internet access, HTTP Custom is the fastest starting point and ha tunnel plus is the most reliable fallback when configs expire.

One thing I've noticed with MTN SA is how consistently its proxy traffic handling works across major metros. HTTP Custom configs connect reliably in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. In rural areas of the Northern Cape, Free State and Mpumalanga where MTN operates on 2G or 3G, ha tunnel plus handles slower signals more gracefully and is the better choice for those locations.

MTN South Africa participates in MTN Group's pan-African network update programme. These updates periodically close the proxy ports that HTTP Custom configs rely on. I've found MTN SA configs typically need refreshing every 2 to 3 weeks. Ha tunnel plus configs last significantly longer, often 4 to 6 weeks, because SSH traffic over port 443 is not affected by the same proxy management changes that take down HTTP Custom.

Setup guide

How to import and connect

Select your app below to see the import steps. All three methods work on Android and you do not need a rooted device.

1
Download the .hc config file
Go to the MTN South Africa HTTP Custom page and download a config file. Start with the Unlimited config if you are unsure which to pick.
2
Open HTTP Custom
Launch the HTTP Custom app on your Android device. You will see the main screen with a connection panel at the top.
3
Import the config file
Tap the folder icon or the three-dot menu in the top right. Select "Import Config" and navigate to where you saved the .hc file.
If you downloaded the file on your phone, check the Downloads folder first.
4
Connect
Tap the power button on the main screen. HTTP Custom will request a VPN permission on first use. Accept it and the connection will start.
5
Confirm you are connected
The status bar turns green and shows bytes being transferred. Open your browser and load any page to confirm everything is working.
If it does not connect within 30 seconds, try the Fast Config variant instead.
1
Download the .ehi config file
Request the .ehi config file from the MTN South Africa HTTP Injector request page and download once it is ready. Note that .ehi files are specific to HTTP Injector and will not open in HTTP Custom.
2
Open HTTP Injector
Launch HTTP Injector on your Android device. You will see the dashboard with connection details and a start button at the bottom.
3
Import the .ehi config
Tap the menu icon in the top right and choose "Import Config". Select your .ehi file. The app loads all settings from the file automatically.
Do not edit any settings after importing. The config is pre-configured for MTN SA.
4
Tap Start
Tap the Start button. HTTP Injector will ask for a VPN permission if this is your first time. Grant the permission and the connection will begin.
5
Check the log tab
If bytes are being transferred in the log tab, the connection is working. Open your browser to confirm. A connection failure at this point usually means the config has expired.
If the config has expired, switch to ha tunnel plus or request a fresh config from this site.
1
Download the .hat config file
Go to the MTN South Africa Ha Tunnel Plus page and download the .hat config file.
2
Open Ha Tunnel Plus
Launch ha tunnel plus on your Android device. The home screen shows your current connection state and a connect button.
3
Import the .hat file
Tap the import icon at the top of the screen (a folder with an arrow pointing inward). Select the .hat file you downloaded. The config loads automatically with no manual setup required.
Ha tunnel plus saves the config permanently. You only need to import once per config file.
4
Connect
Tap the Connect button. Ha tunnel plus connects via SSH and may take up to 10 seconds on the first attempt. Grant the VPN permission when prompted.
5
You're online
When the status shows Connected, open your browser and load any page. Ha tunnel plus maintains a stable SSH connection that holds well even on weaker MTN signals in rural areas.
Ha tunnel plus is the best choice in rural areas and on 2G or 3G signals where HTTP Custom struggles.
1
Request the Stark VPN config
Go to the config request page, select MTN South Africa and Stark VPN, and submit your details. You will receive the config file by email within 24 hours.
2
Open Stark VPN
Launch Stark VPN on your Android device. You will see the connection status panel and a menu icon at the top right on the home screen.
3
Import the config file
Tap the menu icon and select "Import" or "Load Config". Navigate to the config file you received and select it. Stark VPN loads all settings automatically.
If the Import option is not visible, check inside Settings or the three-dot menu.
4
Connect
Tap the Connect button. Grant the VPN permission when prompted. Stark VPN typically connects in under five seconds on a strong MTN 4G signal.
5
Test the connection
Open your browser and load any page to confirm the connection is active. Stark VPN's UDP tunnelling performs well for calls and streaming on stable MTN 4G.
On a weak signal, switch to ha tunnel plus. It handles 2G and 3G more reliably than UDP tunnelling.

FAQ

Common questions

Which config works best on MTN South Africa? +
Start with the HTTP Custom Unlimited config. It delivers 5 to 20 Mbps with no data cap and is the fastest option on MTN SA. When that config expires, switch to the Ha Tunnel Plus config, which is the most durable fallback and typically lasts 4 to 6 weeks before needing a refresh.
Do I need airtime or data loaded to use these configs? +
No. These configs are designed to work on a zero-balance MTN SIM. You do not need any airtime or data loaded before connecting. All you need is an active MTN SIM with a network signal. If you have a data bundle active, disable it first to make sure the config connects on zero balance.
Why do MTN South Africa configs stop working? +
MTN SA participates in MTN Group's pan-African network update schedule. These updates, which happen every 2 to 3 weeks on average, close the proxy ports used by HTTP Custom. When that happens, switch to the Ha Tunnel Plus config while I work on a fresh HTTP Custom file. You can also submit a request and I'll upload an updated config within 24 hours.
Does it work with WhatsApp, YouTube and TikTok? +
Yes. Once connected, the config routes all internet traffic on your device. WhatsApp messages, calls and status updates all work normally. YouTube and TikTok stream without issues on HTTP Custom at speeds of 10 Mbps or above. Ha tunnel plus is slower but still handles standard definition video and audio calls without interruption.
My config connected but the internet is slow. What do I do? +
A few things to try: first, check your MTN signal strength. Speeds drop on 3G or weaker signals. Second, try the Fast Config variant on the HTTP Custom page for higher peak speeds. Third, disconnect and reconnect. The tunnel sometimes picks a faster server on the second attempt. If speeds stay below 1 Mbps after reconnecting, the config may be partially patched and it's time to switch apps.
Does HTTP Injector work on MTN South Africa? +
Yes. HTTP Injector (.ehi files) delivers 3 to 12 Mbps and is a useful middle ground between HTTP Custom and ha tunnel plus. It tends to last 2 to 5 weeks before needing a refresh. A config for MTN SA is not yet uploaded but you can request one here and I'll have it ready within 24 hours. If both HTTP Custom and HTTP Injector stop working at the same time, that usually signals a larger MTN network update. Switch to ha tunnel plus in that case.
Will MTN detect or suspend my account for using these configs? +
I have not had reports of MTN SA suspending accounts for using these configs. MTN's response to working configs is typically to patch the port rather than target individual users. That said, avoid mobile banking and other sensitive transactions while connected, as your traffic passes through third-party servers.
Can I get a config for a different VPN app? +
Yes. VPN4Pros has config files for 25+ VPN apps, including Stark VPN, TLS Tunnel, NPV Tunnel, KPN Tunnel, Dark Tunnel and more. If you want a config for a specific app on MTN South Africa, submit a request here and I'll have it uploaded within 24 hours. You can also join the WhatsApp group to ask directly.
